Big Birds come to Wheeler, Indiana
- NWI Times

The large size of the airfield and its surrounding spaciousness presents the luxury of being able to fly giant scale aircraft as well as ones that are…  not as big.

The airfield, located North West of Valparaiso, consists of a 465' grass runway (north-south) by 275' feet wide (east-west) with a 300x30' state of the art Geotextile runway, a shelter structure and Porta Potties for the comfort of the members and visitors.  The field is well tended and mowed twice a week.

Welcome to Our Runway

We provide 2-3 trainers to get you started or to hone your skills. Just use the link to contact any of them.

Midwest Sundowners prides itself on being an inclusive community of model enthusiasts dedicated to teaching and training those who wish to learn more or start pursuing model aviation. We insist on creating a safe environment for its members and guests.

We sponsor many club events throughout the flying season which are all open to the public.   Occasionally there is a modest fee, lunch is usually provided.

Membership is open to anyone with an interest in model aviation. Our facilities are behind locked gates and can only be accessed if you are a member. If you wish to visit the facility, you may contact any officer to arrange for a member to escort you.

Looking forward to Season 2017!....

January 2017 –

Members and Guests,

Our field and membership continues to improve!  With a new, large shelter that's perfect for events or staying out of the sun on a lazy afternoon while chatting with friends. There is also a tower that's perfect to monitor and record pilot flights. In addition we have a trainer staff and a slew of new faces… Last year we added a 300x30' Geotextile runway for smaller models, jets or whom ever fancies flying off of it.

I look forward to the mercury rising so we can all get back out there!

Our turnout for events is also very encouraging – last year’s War Bird Day, Big Bird Day were some of the finest events we have had complete with demonstrations, great raffles and a bunch of grins.

For those of you who are members and officers, I thank you and look forward to seeing you soon.  For those who are curious about what we do – come out and join the fun!
